Cloud Nothings
Ohio’s Cloud Nothings spit and slash their way through a tight 34-minute record on Attack on Memory. What started as a casual project for frontman Dylan Baldi has now evolved into a full-fledged band, which is pressing its third album under the Cloud Nothings moniker. Like another recent favorite, FIDLAR, Cloud Nothings’ songs drip with corrosive guitar solos and motifs surrounding hopeless youth.

Baldi’s sentiments come through best on songs like the compact lo-fi gem Stay Useless. “I need time to stop moving/ I need time to stay useless,” a lyric that reminds us that sometimes being very busy people is not all its cracked up to be. Meanwhile, the vitreous nine-minute stretch of Wasted Days seethes with venom and energy for the first half of the song, eventually yielding to a roiling tangle of echoing screams and bleak drums only to return to cathartic neurosis in the last minute. A nine-minute song never sounded so loud and sharp.

There’s not a lot of joy to be found on Attack on Memory. What makes the album so listenable is how Cloud Nothings manage to include such vitality into such heavy themes. A visceral attack indeed.
